The Math

Americans' Holiday Spending

Every winter, from November to December, Americans spend about $450 billion on food, gifts, decorations, and other holiday wares.

That's a lot of cash! Where, exactly, does it all go? Find the details on the graph below and the table to the right.

What do you think would happen if we took just a little of that money and sent it somewhere else? What could change if every American bought a meal for a stranger, instead of a sweater for their dog? Would it really matter? Find out below...

Cost to Change the World

According to the math, yes, it would make a difference. It would make a big difference. Less than 20 percent of our total holiday spending -- $77 billion -- could end some of the most devastating effects of global poverty, including hunger, disease, deforestation, and lack of education.

If Americans cut back just a little on gifts, decorations, and other holiday spending, we really could change the world. We can have our holiday pies and share them, too. Take a look:

Changes We'd Have to Make

The average American currently spends about $1,936 every holiday season. With a few minor adjustments, we could all save some extra cash and send it to someone in need.

Below, you'll find a breakdown of the average American's current holiday budget. You might spend more than the listed amount on some items (I don't know any Christmas tree that costs $1.46) and less on others, but, in the end, this is approximately what the average American spends from November to December every year.

You'll also see what could happen if we adjusted that budget a little. If we all gave $130 out of that $1,936, we could end hunger for a year. For $2.13 annually, we could actually save the rainforest. And for $43, we could give every man, woman, and child in the world clean water for at least ten years, eliminating 35.75 million deaths.

Imagine what a holiday season like that would look like.

Can we do it?

We have the means. The question is, do we have the will? The amount Americans spend on jewelry every holiday season could provide clean water for everyone in the world for at least 10 years. That would save 35.75 million lives and empty half of the world's hospital beds.

Our holiday postage bills alone would be enough to guarantee primary education for every person in the world for a year. And we'd still have enough leftover to prevent the spread of nearly all HIV/AIDS cases.

What's more important this holiday season?
